Kansas High School Student Wins National Beef Industry Scholarship
CME Group, National Cattlemen’s Foundation Award Scholarships to Ten Students.
SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 29, 2010) – Chandra Devine, a high school senior at Macksville High School in Seward, Kan., has been named winner of the 2010 National Beef Industry Scholarship, sponsored by CME Group and the National Cattlemen’s Foundation. Ten outstanding students pursuing careers in the beef industry have each been awarded $1,500 scholarships in the program.
Devine will be a freshman at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. during the 2010-2011 academic year. As the national winner, she was awarded an all-expense-paid trip to the 2010 Cattle Industry Annual Convention and Trade Show in San Antonio, Tex., where she was recognized during the “Salute to the Best of Beef Awards Breakfast” on January 28.
The scholarships are offered to high school seniors and undergraduate college students studying fields related to the beef industry. The ten winners represent eight different states with five of the recipients being high school seniors. Each scholarship winner wrote a 750-word essay that identified key issues confronting the beef industry and suggested possible solutions for dealing with those issues.
Other winners were: Brad Copenhaver, Virginia Tech College, Blacksburg, Va.; Drake Yon, Ridge Spring-Monetta, Ridge Spring, S.C.; Kassie Curran, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.; Elissa Emmons, Texas A University, College Station, Texas; Meghan Blythe, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.; Nathan Wilen, Belle Fourche High School, Belle Fourche, S.D. (to attend S.D. State University); Andy Vickers, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo.; and Clinton Laflin, Butler Community College, El Dorado, Kan.
“For more than 20 years we have partnered with CME Group on this important program,” said Bob Josserand, chairman of the National Cattlemen’s Foundation Board of Trustees. “We believe this is an important tool that will help advance the beef industry careers of these outstanding students.”
The Beef Industry Scholarship was introduced in 1989 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Live Cattle Futures Contract on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, now part of CME Group. The exchange and the National Cattlemen’s Foundation are committed to the future of the cattle industry and continue to recognize and support outstanding youth in the beef community.
